Practical Application Technologies for GGBF-Based Alkali-Activated Materials

Synopsis
Alkali-activated materials are being researched and developed in Japan and abroad as inorganic construction materials that use industrial by-products and whose production is associated with low CO2 emissions. Because alkali-activated materials directly use strongly alkaline components, unlike cement concrete, careful attention must be paid to their handling, strength development, and durability. This paper reports some of the countermeasures implemented and technical solutions developed for issues encountered in pursuing the practical application of blast furnace slag-based alkali-activated materials, including handling-related issues, the approach to mix proportioning, and freeze-thaw resistance as one aspect of durability.
