Development of Low-Carbon Sprayed Concrete Dome Construction Method

Synopsis
Carbon recycling technology is essential for achieving the 2050 carbon-neutrality target. With carbon recycling in mind, we developed a CO2-absorbing sprayed concrete method in which in-situ carbonation curing is carried out using a dome structure constructed by a sprayed concrete dome method. We also developed a spraying method for environmentally friendly low-carbon concrete and used it in the demonstration construction of a dome structure at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. This dome structure is the first case in which CO2-absorbing concrete was used in the structural frame to realize in-situ carbonation curing. This paper reports that the properties of the concrete used in the dome were verified through specimens and samples taken from the dome, confirming sufficient strength development and CO2 sequestration.
