- Synopsis
- Ca(OH)2 and C-S-H generated by the hydration of cement react with CO2 in the atmosphere and are converted to the more stable CaCO3. This phenomenon, which is called carbonation of concrete, has great potential for the absorption of CO2 from the atmosphere, and it is currently gaining interest toward the realization of a carbon-neutral society. On the other hand, the loss of alkali due to the carbonation of concrete is a well-known durability impairing phenomenon known as neutralization that causes internal steel corrosion. This paper discusses both carbonation, which has positive aspects for concrete structures, and neutralization, which has negative aspects, based on the latest knowledge in research and practice.
