- Synopsis
- The Committee on Steel Structures of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers established in 1997 a sub- committee on highway steel bridge decks, which has been conducting ongoing investigations and research since. A research sub-committee on evaluation for combined deterioration of highway bridge decks established in 2013 published a compendium of some of the research results titled "Manual for Maintenance of Highway Bridge Decks 2016" (Steel Structure Series 27) in October 2016. This manual focuses exclusively deck slabs, which are among the components of highway bridges that undergo the most deterioration. It is comprised of sections on damage and deterioration of highway bridge decks, inspection and investigation methods, evaluation of deterioration progress and processes, selection of countermeasures, and maintenance case examples. The appendix provides maintenance management cases and further details on detailed investigation, evaluation methods, countermeasure selection examples, design and construction, and soundness quantifiacation.
