Synopsis
Gunkan Island (official name: Hashima) is an island with an outer perimeter of approximately 1.2 km and is protected by a vertical concrete revetment. Gunkan Island features a number of important modern industrial heritage facilities and RC buildings, and for this reason it has been gaining attention as a cultural asset and touristic resource. This island was expanded six times since the Meiji Era, and the revetment is between 82 and l16 years old. Maintaining the revetment in a suitable state is important for preserving the island. This paper provides an overview of the revetment of Gunkan Island and describes the results of a durability survey and visual inspection of the revetment.
