- Synopsis
- Corrosion of steel bars in concrete is a common concern to the concrete professioonals (researchers and engineers) as one of the major causes of deterioration of reinforced concrete structures. Numerous studies on this subject were carried out since long ago (several decades ago). However, results on the long-term exposure tests are still necessary to understand how the corrosion process takes place in the real concrete structures. This development is also necessary to predict the service life of a structure accurately. With this background, based on the several long-term exposure tests, the authors summarize the key observations on the carbonation and chloride induced corrosion of steel bars in concrete. The results will also be very useful to compare with the short-term accelerated laboratory observations.
