Synopsis
The technology of joint at discontinuity in concrete is indispensable for the construction of modern and future concrete structure. In particular, the most important technology is the joint of precast concrete Structural members subjected to a complicatedcombination of stresses, including, flexure, tension and shear. This paper emphasizes theimportance of development of framework for general design method applicable to that typesof joints. The design needs to be based on the rational modeling acounting strengh and deformation of joint element. This paper also summarizes the state of the arts of the concrete joint design from the stand points of views as follows, (1) availability of experimental data necessary for establishment of constitutive law as well as failure criteria of joint elements, (2) current mathematical modeling of member having discontinuous joint, used for analyzing stress and deformation and (3) identification of preformance requirements to the joint elements, which are logically derived from performance requirement to structures.
